In 1999, a small business owner heard an informal talk given by the CEO of a young, upstart company that was banking its success on an under-served niche in the communications industry.
If anyone is a good judge of business viability, it's Pat Lawrence, President of Sunbelt Business Brokers of Portland, and the short speech was enough for her to begin a nearly decade-long relationship with Integra Telecom.
Since opening in 1997, Sunbelt Business Brokers of Portland has become the area's largest business brokerage-advising, packaging, and selling a broad range of companies throughout the Portland, Salem, and Vancouver, Washington metro areas.
Sunbelt focuses on helping find new ownership for established businesses with revenues between $300,000 and $20,000,000. They have successfully brokered sales and acquisitions of software companies, printing and shipping, restaurants, wine distributors, light manufacturing operations, nurseries, franchises, retail and service businesses, and custom woodworking companies to name a few. Sunbelt even handles the real estate holdings when needed.
Sunbelt's services prepare business owners for a successful sale by helping them determine the business' value, compiling the necessary financial documentation, and of course, marketing the business to prospective buyers. When potential buyers show interest, Sunbelt aids the seller in assessing the buyer's business acumen and financial position. And while they primarily represent the interests of business sellers, Sunbelt sometimes offers guidance to purchasers as well, by arranging financing for example.
To maximize exposure of its clients, Sunbelt leverages its network of 350 offices worldwide, including 20 offices in Canada and 14 other international locations. The company markets its business listings through its network database and through postings to over 25 websites. Over time, online marketing activity has supplanted print advertising, leading to a greater reliance on stable Internet access.
Sunbelt became an Integra customer in 1999, shortly after Pat Lawrence heard Integra's CEO address a gathering of small businesses. "He shared Integra's emphasis on local service and attention to customer needs." Lawrence recalls. "That certainly wasn't how I was being treated by the monopoly carrier at the time." She decided to try the fledgling telecom company and signed up for business telephone and Internet access services.
"It has been gratifying to see them succeed and expand," Lawrence says. "Over the years, even though the company has grown, they have still maintained their integrity and attention to personal service. People answer questions and they care."
