Airlift Northwest

Tragedy is often the catalyst for change, and that was certainly the motivation for creating Airlift Northwest.

When a fire in Sitka, Alaska fire took the lives of three small children, a visiting physician wondered if a fast-response, air medical transport network in the Pacific Northwest could have saved their lives.

That concerned physician, Dr. Michael Copass, and a collective of Seattle-area hospitals formed that very network, now known as Airlift Northwest. Over 25 years later, approximately 80,000 patients have been flown by the non-profit emergency air transport between hospitals and, increasingly, from emergency scenes.

Airlift Northwest operates its fleet of 4 helicopters and 2 Lear jets from bases in Seattle, Bellingham, Arlington, Olympia, and Juneau. These aircraft are much more than simple air taxis. Airlift Northwest Executive Director Chris Martin calls them, "flying intensive care units."

"Inside both the Lear jet and the helicopter, you see what resembles a mini-intensive care unit. Both are staffed with 2 critical care nurses and a pilot," Martin shares. "Response times in western Washington can be within minutes of take-off."

When patients need advanced care from other specialized facilities, Airlift Northwest fixed-wing aircraft can deliver them to locations throughout the U.S., Canada, and even Mexico. Safe passage to destinations is enhanced by their investment in airflight technologies like state-of-the-art night-vision goggles, satellite, and GPS approach systems.

As the sole, critical medical flight resource in the Seattle area, Airlift Northwest counts on reliable, 24 x 7 voice and internet service to maintain critical coordination with emergency services and hospitals. And Integra Telecom is pleased to be Airlift Northwests dedicated T-1 service provider of choice since 2006.

Chris Martin recalls, "When we went out to bid, our priorities were finding a local, close-by provider, a complete set of services, and a good value. Integra Telecom certainly fit that bill."
